Frank McCourt was born in Manhattan, New York in 1930 but was raised in Limerick, Ireland. He and his three brothers all grew up with an alcoholic father, whimsical mother, and barely just enough money to skid by. He is widely known for his childhood memoir Angela’s Ashes and made Tis: a memoir the second installment in his series. The book follows his life from when he was on the boat crossing over from Ireland to America all the way to when his father passed away. Tis: a memoir serves to show how Frank McCourt went against the trend of staying with his own people and was forced to pay the consequences on several occasions. Tis: a memoir starts where Angela’s Ashes ended, with McCourt on the boat heading to America. On his voyage he makes a connection with a priest who is able to help him establish himself when he gets to New York. The priest helped him get a job as a busboy in the Biltmore Hotel and he was able to stay in a room. The racial lines among foreigners are evident very early on in this book and Frank is taught to not converse with hotel clients or the kitchen workers which all happen to be Puerto Ricans. His past jobs in the coal mines have had a major impact on his eyes and have made them pus-filled and irritated.
